Sarah E. Piles
Sarah E. Piles (maiden name: Hamilton) was born around 1843 in Ohio to Jacob Hamilton. Her father was a shoemaker in Preble County, Ohio, who owned $800 of real estate and $300 of personal property in 1860. She married John M. Piles in Preble County on March 18, 1864, and they had at least two children: Oakleigh, born around 1867; and Lola, who was born in 1868 and died in 1871. By 1880, they were living in Darke County, Ohio, and her husband was working as a painter. The family moved to Dayton, Ohio, sometime before 1900, and they were living in Cleveland, Ohio, by 1900. Her husband died in Cleveland on March 24, 1919, and Sarah applied for a widow’s pension a few weeks later. She moved in with her son Oakleigh’s family after her husband’s death. She passed away in Cleveland on August 20, 1928.
