Enos Reed to Louisa A. Walker, 16 October 1862
Camp Lanman Oct 16th 1862.
My Dear Wife;
I have been thinking all week that I would write you a long letter today; but I have just been releaved from guard duty, and as the mail will leave camp shortly, my time will be too limited for me to make a minute detail of all that has passed lately. Yesterday morning our Reg was mustered in, after which each man rec'd the long expected forty dollars in "green-backs" Jim and I sent $95 by Mr Wm S Boyd of Chariton, to Old Mr Harden, with the instructions that he (Mr Harden) would deliver it to you. Sixty-five dollars ($65.) of it is for you and the remaining thirty dollars / ($30.) for Mary. The denominations of the bills are 5's and 20s There are two of the latter denomination one of which is for you.
Dave and I together kept $15.00 I send you a Historical War Map which will assist you greatly in ascertaining the position and movements of the armies.
I have subscribed for a Co Register which will cost about three dollars when it is properly filled out. I will not attempt to make a description of it as you will soon have the opertunity of seeing it for yourself.
Perhaps you will get Dave's and my miniatures the next mail after you get this. I had my miniature taken yesterday and Dave went to the City today to get his. You had better let Mother have the pictures which you have at home and keep the ones I send you for mother I believe is more averse to mustaches than you are
Your very affectionate husband Enos Reed
