James H. Harden to Enos Reed, 7 March 1863
Memphis March 7th 1863
 
 Dear Brother Ene
I received yours of the 26th last thursday and was very glad to hear from you and to hear that you and the rest of the boys was well I also received the descriptive roll being the second that I have received but it is better to have two than none
 
I supose that long since you got the letter I wrote saying that I had got the money you sent and also the descriptive roll that the capt sent first I think I wrote it the next day after the one that you / speake of geting I am well except my knee that does not appear to get much better I have no use of it yet but it does not pain me much now I received a letter from home home last thursday they was all well I also received a letter from my Father. they had heard that I was dead but got a letter from me while they was writing I have no news to write there is nothing of interest going on here I wish you would see Louis Adkinson of our Co and ask him that if he knows / anything about my knapsack I left it in his care and he ought to know what became of it
 
I also loned my knife to Wallace to rip my pants when I was wounded and he kept it to rip others he said you get it if you can I will finish in the morning
 
Sunday morning March 8
            I am all right this morning although my knee pained me worse last night than it has for some time before
 
we had a fire last night in the City but it did / not amount to much and also one the night before
 
            I am writing to Mary and to my Father today tell Coony I want to hear from him I wrote a letter to Collins of the 33rd last Monday
 
            Well I will quit give my respects to all the boys
