           New Orleans  Aug 13th  1862
 
          Dear Wife
                          Your letter of July 30th came
to hand last night and was very glad to here
from you    I had began to think I wasnt going to
here from you but you had a very good reason
for not writing before    Well Frances you seam
to be somewhat disapointed about my coming
home    Well Dear Frances I may come yet    I should
like to go home just as much as you would like
to have me    the papers are made out for five or
six and signed by our serjon but tha are
laying in the captains office    now how long
tha will lay thare I dont know   I hope not
long   I do hope he will take some interest
in it and get them fixed out some time
but I serpose he will take his own time
for it     Tha are expecting a transport vessel
here every day and if he is going to do aney thing
about it I wish he would be about it so if we
can go home I should like to go on this boat
when she goes back    My health is some better
than it has been but dont feel very spunkey
yet    you must not worey about me if I dont
come home this time    if I dont come now
I am inhops to some other time    I rather think
tha will let me go but if not I will stay here
and do the best I can    I want to see you very
much and all the rest    I had a letter from Fred
the other day     he said that mother was proberly
failing every day    I want to see her very much
and do hope it will be so I can before long
the health of the boys is very good   We havent
but one in the hospital    that is F K Gore
tha had a perty hard fight up to Baton Rouge
the 5th   Our folks only had twenty five hundred
troops and the rebels eight thousand but our
men drove them back    General Williams was
killed    Colonel Roberts of the 7th VT was killed
15teen killed & wounded in the 7thVT   tha took
quite a number of prisoners  tha was sent to
this citty    I dont think of much more to
write this time    it is very hot weather
here   it rains most every daybut it dont
seem to cool the air much     I want to see you
very much and are inhops to before long    You
sade your side troubled some time this summer
I dont want you to work so hard when you
aint able to     You must go a visiting and get rested
you must go up town and stay a while and then
up to St Johnsbury    I should like to be thare and
go with you     perhaps I will before long    Write soon
