Philip Grove Altland
Philip Grove Altland was born on March 1, 1839, in Pennsylvania to Philip and Catherine Altland. His father was a farmer who owned $7,000 of real estate and $1,800 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Warrington, Pennsylvania, before attending college in New York.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 24, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 18th New York Cavalry. The regiment took part in the Red River campaign, and heeventually earned a promotion to sergeant. As one comrade observed, “No man in the Company was more respected.” He died of chronic diarrhea in Marshall, Texas, on July 7, 1865.
