              Opelousas, La April 23rd, 1863
 
      Dear Wife,
                       I will write a few lines
and let you know that I am in the
land of living     We started from
Brashear City on the 8th and arived here
the 20th    We have marched about one
hundred miles and have had one
fight and have got out of it
all safe as near as I can learn
We had one killed and 8 wounded
in our regiment    We had one
wounded in our compania
I cant stop to write aney
more this time     give my best
respects to all and accept
a good share your self
When we get to a stopping
plase I will all the news

I am all right so far
