Dear Wife
I will write a few lines
and let you know that I am alive
and well and hope these few lines
will find you thhe same I should
like to be thare with you very much
but you see we are marching on
We are just beginning to know what
it is to be a solger We have
marched very near one hundred
miles Wer had a fight the 12th
at Center Hill and a hard fight
it was to It was the hardest
artillery fighting that I ever
seen the eighth was in the hottest of
it thare was one killed and seven
or eight wounded in our regiment
There was one wounded in Co D
in the head but not dangerous
his name is H C Richardson from
Topsham We have drove the rebels from
Branshear City and I cant know
how much further that we have to go We
came in light marching order with
only our blankets and one extra shirt
We left our knap sacks at Brashear
City I dont know whether we are going
back or not but I think we shall have
to get to Vitcksburg next but I dont know
the night Vermont is ahead of aney
thing there is here thare is about twenty
thousand of us here and we take the
lead I cant write much more for
paper and ink is scarce with us
first now When we get our knapsacks
I will write again you let aney
folks know that I am well and
all right for I cant write to them
Now give my love to all and
accept a good share yourself
