Nathaniel Robie to Frances Robie, 26 December 1863
New Iberia, La,  Dec 26th 1863

Dear Wife
Yours of Nov 30th Dec 8th was
read last night with much plasure and
will try and awnser them the best I can
for I have not a very good plase to write here
I was very glad to here that you was well and
all the rest    Dear Wife I would like to be thare
with you very much but I am afraid that it
will be some time before I can come home again
tha are beginning to talk it purty strong that
our time is not out till one year from next
Febuary but I shant beileve it yet    I hope it
will be out next June    tha have no right to
keep us any longer than that    I dont think
thare has an order come here to have us reinlist
for three years longer       all that reinlist will
get a bounty of four hundred and two
dolars and a furlough of thirty days
in the State of Vermont    If tha get
three forth of the regiment tha will
be sent home as a regiment on furlough
and what dont reinlist will have to
stay here and be put into another
regiment and surve out thare time here
if I knew our time would not be out till
one year from next Febuary I dont know
but I should be almost temted to
enlist again    the three years will comense
at the time of enlisting so if a man
wants to stay in the armey he will
save one year if our old term of survis
is not out till one year from next febuary
Well Frances I said when at home that
I never would enlist again if I ever
got out of this that we are in for now
but if we enlist it would be before
we get out of this that we are in for
if I knew our time was out next
June there is not money enough in
this State to hire me to enlistagain
so if we hav to stay another year I think
the fighting would all be done before
our time would be out so if we
do not enlist we shall lose 402 dolars
but that might not never do me aney
good    if not it would you    I think all
that do enlist will get a chanse to go
home within the next two or three
months and visit thare friends thare
Well I wont write much more about
this    I should like to have you write to
me how you feel about it   I want you to
say jest what you think     I will leave
it to you to decide    Well you wanted to
know whether we had a plesant voage
coming out here    We had a very smothe
and plesant one    thare was six of us
that belong to the eight    Newman did not
come    We stoped at Key West Floridy
I went ashore there but did not like
the plase well enough to live there
You wanted to know about sending your
picture to Edwin Fuller    Well you
can do as you like about it   He wanted I should
tell you to do as you think best    I think his
address is 373 eighth avene NY City but
would not be curtain    I have been on
duty four days and I am purty tough
for me    We are to have a General
inspection to morrow morning at 8
o clock so you see we have to work
Sundays as much as aney other days here
& Monday the 28th thare is to a young
man shot here for dersion & various other
things    he belongs to the 114th NG    I expect
we shall all have to go & see it as he belongs
to our briggade    I should rather stay away than
go    Well it is getting late in the evening and
I must go to bed and get some rest for
I shall have to be up early in the morning
Will finish tomorrow    I will close by biding
you a good night and a kiss
Dec 29th
             Well Frances Good Morning
You will see that I did not finish my
letter the next day    I did not feel
able to write so I put it off but
am feeling better to day    I have no
news to write onley that man was
not shot    I dont know what tha
are to do with him    It is very windy
windy here     I went up town yesterday
& bought me a par of boots & what
do you think I paid for them    Well I
paid only ten dolars    A purty good
prise I think dont you    I dont think
of much more to write this time
Will close Write soon and all the news
