Nathaniel Robie to Frances Robie, 20 January 1864
Camp Near Franklin, La Jan 20th, 1864

Dear Wife

Yours of tDec 20th was read
with much plasure and will try and
awnser it the best I can    Was glad
to here you was all well at home
My health is very good at present
and hope these few lines will
find you the same    I see by your
letter that you have not recived aney
letters from me sinse I left
New York   I have wrote to you
twice or three times sinse then
Well Frances What kind of a winter
are you having thare in Old Vermont
A plesant one I hope    We have hald
a very hard one here with us
it has been cold & rainey & mud
up to our knees almost    We have
a grate deal better Camp ground here
than we hald thare     We left New Iberia
the ninth I think it was and came here
Well we have found out when our
time is out    It came from the War
Department this morning    It is not
out till one year from next Febuary
We made up our minds that if we
hald got to stay till then that
we might as well go the whole hog
and see it plaied out    What should
you say if I should tell you that
I hald reenlisted    Well we made up
our minds that the war would be
over before our present turm of
enlistment would be out so on
that we have reenlisted but
I dont think that tha will
except of us for the reason
that we have not been in the
servis two years yet    I dont
think you will blame your
little man for doing what
he has done    It was not because
I wanted to be in the armey
but if 3/4 of the regiment enlisted
tha would be sent home on
a furlough of thirty days and
what dont enlist will be put
into some other regiment and
if the eight Vermont went
home perhaps tha would not
be sent back here agane and
if tha did not we should
stand a good chanse to serve
one year among strangers
Dear Wife  if I have done wrong
I hope you will forgive me
as the thing stood I thought
it was the best thing I
could do    About every man
in our Co has enlisted    We
are expecting the recruits here
in about a weak from
Vermont to fill up our regt
I understand that John, Clemont,
Milton Davis & Dan Davis have
enlisted    If so I hope that we will
come out here in my Co    I will use
them as well as I can    I dont think
of much more to write this time
the boys are in good health
I should like very much to be thare
with you this winter but that
cant be at present for Uncle Sam
has a claim on us another year
and by that time I hope the war will
be settled up and then we can go home
and see our dear friends never to go
a solgering agane    Must close for
this time    Give my love to all and
accept a good share for your self
Write soon and all the news
Good Night
              From Your aff Husband
