      New Orleans La June 9th 1864
 
Dear Wife      
 
            I will write you a few lines and let you know that I am alive and well and hope these few lines will find you the sam at home we arived in New Orleans all right we are camped in the Cressant City cotton press we dont expect to stay here long I think we shall go to Algiers tomorrow and join the new recruits and then we expect to go from thare to Magansa bend about fifteen miles above Port.Hudson tha say that we are to keep the Missippia River open this sumer but I dont know whather it is true or not if it is we shall have some steamboating to do we shall have to fight girillers Capt. Leach started for home with all the men that did not reinlist the 5th of this month tha are to be musterd out thare I presume you will see him before this reaches you tell him that E G. Stevens of our Co is but jest alive he fell out of the window in the cotton press he fell about fifteen feet and struck on the stone side walk I dont think he will ever get well he was one of the best boys that we hald in the Co I have not seen Milton nor Albert yet Milt is as tough as a bar tha say Albert is in the Hospital and is doing well the rest of the boys are well as usal I have not ben musterd yet and dont know how soon I shall be I hope before long I cant rite much more to night if I do I shall be eat up by these little fellows that have long picked bills so I will close with much love to you Write Soon
