Dear Wife
yours of July 17th was recived last night and was very glad to here from you but was very sorey to here you was so unwell Dear Wife I do hope you will be better soon you must be as carful as you can about working to hurt you O how I wish I was thare to comfort you Frances I never wanted go to home so bad as I do now I have got tiard and sick of the survis it is nothing but a humbug I don’t wandor the army of the Potomac are discureged it is anough to discurege any one well the rebs have made another rade in mariland and I guess tha will have time to make another before it is ended I don’t think this war will ever be ended by fighting we have ben on a campain up as fur as the Shanadore river we drove the rebs about two miles the other side & turned round and came back to this plase we expect to go to Petersburg from here but Frances you must not worey any about me if we go into a fight we must do the best that we can and I do hope the lord will protect us from all harm and we ma live to return home agane Frances if I ever get a chanse to get out of the survis I shall do it but if I should resign now tha would not except of it I think if I thought tha would I would send it in dredful quick Frances I have just hurd some sad news I hald a letter from Amanda she says that Charles is dead he was wounded the 3d of June and died the 24th it is hard to have Brothers killed in this way you spoke about that money you hald with you well I think you hald better keep it for your own use you will want to use it your self perhaps I think that would be the best way for you to do I dont think of much more to write this time so I will close by wishing my darling Good Night write soon & all the news love to all
