Dear Brother
I thought as I had a few spare moments I would write to you and let you know how I am geting along I am well and with the ambalance train yet and having quite easey times jist now the regt is with Genl Baley and an engineer Regt working on the docks and Bridges at the landing near Alabama City the regt was in front when we atackded Spanish Battery the 26th Cos A & I was scirmishers and went up within easey range of the works Chris Such got a slite wound on his left leg in the calf the onely one in the regt there was 4 or 5 in the Brig. on the morning of 27 the rebes made a charge on the boys but had to go back severel less than they came out with and the scirmishers advansed a considerable the Boys was relieved and rested the after noon on the 28th / they got to the landing the 29 Ill regt wer in front and lost severley from shells there was one that kiled 4 and wounded 9 besides severel others through the day. I helped take severel to the hospital. we carried one that had one side of his head hit by a piece of a shell he died two days after. I tell you it is no pleasent work to take the wounded of off the field Some are hurt so they dont know eney thing others are crazy and some you can not move without thear hollering and then to see some where thear wounds are made with shells it is awfull to look at but it must be done there is some that have thear legs or armes broken and make sport all the while. but they generly keep up good spirits they send the wounded away to NO as fast as they can there was 130 taken of on the 29 mostley of A J Smithes Command there was but 9 or 10 from our Division they wer most all bulley good fellows and stood the ride 3 miles well / on the 3 our Division was ordered to go out with supplyes for Steal we went out 4 miles stoped for the night next day we went within 4 or 5 miles of Blakely stoped and threw up brest works on a knoll where there was a saw mill & some houses staid there 2 days before we opened communications with Steal he came in on Blakely from the other side and drove the rebes in thear works then we came on with the supplys and have working around since there is some talk of charging the works but I dont think they will for they say the rebels have a gunboat close by and our folks have baterys planted so they can not run eney transports near thear for fear of being sunk our gunboats are working up slowley but the torpedoes are very thick and the report is that we have had 2 sunk by them but I can not tell eney thing about what we hear nor hardley by what we see so I wont say much more about it now. Yesterday there was quite a mail for the Brig but / all that belonged to the 161 was taken out at the landing so I have not hurd from you since you wrote about Andrews Death I have bin waiting to get a letter the reason I have not wrote sooner
