            Dear Sister.
I received your and Petes kind letters last evening also a pair of socks. I was very glad to learn that you wer all well and the rest of the friends. I am as well as useule. thoes socks jist came in play as I had but one pair left and I am very much oblidge to you and aunte Wanmaker for your kindness. well martha it does seam quear to have you sending me things. I little thought when we wer sleigh riding and atending Speling Schools that you would ever be eney relation of myne and so about soldiering but then we dont know one day what we will do or where we will be the next at least it is so hear in / army you see that I am in a very diferent posisitoon from that when I wrote you before then we lived on puddings and scarcities and all was quiet but now it is hard tacks and sowbelley and shells the former scarce and the latter to plenty for our holsome. although some think the ambalance Corps has it very easey but we have to go into danger some times as wells others

the other day the rebels threw some shells at a signel tree and the shells came over and bursted on our  camp and the pieces flew all around among us but hurt nobody one piece went betwene two men that wer eating thear dinners another piece went threw a soldiers haversack and confiscated 3 days raitions from him but there is meney a poor fellow that dont get of so easey. I hurd yesterday that Agustin Prentiss got wounded by a torpedo and had bin / to New Orleans. I have not seen the Co in some time they are at the landing some 12 miles from hear thoes torpedoes are the worst things ever invented the rebels have planted them all over this land we hear of some ones geting blown up by them most every day. yesterday one of our ambalances was taking some sick to the hospital and there was a cople of men walking along side the road and steped on one which bursted and tore his leg all to pieces and wounding the other some the one that had his leg blown off died they have taken nearley a hundred out around hear they are mostley shells of 30 to 64 lbs weight and fixed so that when a man or horse steps on them they explode I hurd that Genl Canby said he would hang the rebel Genl hear if he can get him alive for having the torpedoes planted in the watering plaices and yards /

I will send a few flowers and a piece of my gals dress that I found hear in rebeldom and I wish you would pleas take care of them for me I sent some flowers to you in one of Peters letters but have not hurd wether you got them or not Please write soon and oblidge a Brother
