Wilson Nevyus to Peter Nevyus, 20 April 1865
Mobile Alabama
April 20th 65

Dear Brother
I received your kind letter of march 28th in good time and was very glad to learn that you wer all well in Pulteney I also received a letter from Josiah at the same time and as I had wrote to you a few days I wrote to Josiah and gave them all the particulars about Spanish fort and fort Blakely. So I thought I would wait a while untill I got to mobile then write to you We the ambalance Corps came across from Blakely on the 12th at night it was very quiet here when we landed I found John Prentiss and he told me that there was a mail at the Co for / me at the Co so off I went and found them in good quarters in a large brick building and everything handy it was onely two blocks from the landing but when I got back the train had gone and left me and it was about dark and I could not find out which way they went so I started on my own back up streat and went all over the city I thought but could not get eney track of them at last I found one of the boys of Co A that belonged to the pioneers so I put up with him for the night and took a new start in the morning and found the train about half a mile from where I staid so I was all right at last and understood navagation some. we are encamped about 2 miles right back from the landing out side the first line of brest workes. there is 3 lines the first and 2 / is very strong with regular forts every 30 or 40 rods apart the midle line is the strongest there was from 5 to 7 guns mounted in each fort on the midle line but none on the inside line I think all the guns wer spiked that was around the city. but there was lots of aminitions in the magazeens and I believe there was a few torpedoes fixed to some of them but done no hurt as I know of and on the whole I think mobile is the nicest city I have seen in the South the streets are straight and well shaded there is 2 streets with horse carrs on one comes out to our camp the other goes out 7 miles every thing is all quiet the citizens thinks the Yankees aint so bad as represented Some of the rebels said that our genls was going to give the soldiers 3 days to plunder the city but they found that was not so and the soldiers behave themselfs / a great deal beter than was expected although they took some chickens and piges &c. &c. I hear that the regt is all going down town to do provo duty I think we will go down there soon for Capt Balard Commander 13 AC ambalance Corps went down town to get a stable to day. the Boys are telling that they hurd down town that Uncle Abe and Seward had been assasinated in richmond and kiled but I cant believe it yet at least I hope not. Well I dont know of eney more news to write this time. Oh yes they say that all the 62 soldiers are to be mustered out on or before the 10th of August 1865 if so I hope I will be home in July to selebrate the fourth well write Soon
