Dear Brother
I thought I would write you a few lines to day and let you know how things are working here about now I am well and have bin on guard at Genl Fosters Head Quarters every other day for the last week & came off this morning. the boys are all well & the new recruites are a going to be mustered out this after noon they have got thear papers all made out I believe and they all feal fine over it. I have bin doing extry duty for Uncle Sam since Monday night. that is I think it is extry for I onely / Enlisted for 3 years, and my time was out the 21st but I dont know but it is right to make up the lost time while I was sick, though thought I had a hard enough time of it then not to make it up
Well I rather think we will all be out fare soon for it aint but a little while till the 27 of Oct but I have quite a notion not to come right home but go up west and see some of my friends if I have got eney up there, but the worst of it is I dont know where but a few of them live. I wish you would write and let me know where Uncle John lives and well you might as well tell me where they all live. So if I have a good time I may go all around amongst them I will tell you the way I got this notion in my head. the other day there came an order that all the men that wanted to stay down here could be mustered out down / here and severel of the boys said that they would be mustered out down here and pay thear fair up the river rather than be loaded and jamed a round with the regt and then after they get to Elmira have to perraide around & show them selfs, and then I thought that I could go from here up west and visit around cheeper than to come home and then go up west. Ainsley McConnell & severel other boys say they will go up west before they come home they calculate to spend the winter west but I dont know wether I will stay all winter or not. you said in your last letter you thought I had better come home as soon as my time was out and then settle up, but I dont think it will make eney diference if I dont come till spring. if you & Josiah think it will write and let me know. I think I will get mustered out and go up the river / and I dont think it will be much out of my way to go to Uncle Johns now I want you to answer this as soon as you can and let me know how you are all geting along. I expect that Rack and Johney Prentiss will be home about as soon as this will come so they can tell you all about what we are adoing if not more. I suppose you have had a letter from here before this time and I am looking every day for one from you We have mail here three times a week so I think I ought to get one soon I dont know how long it takes a letter to go or come but about 8 or 10 days I should think would take it through
we hurd yesterday that part of the 161 got whailed like thunder at Key West a few days ago by the 110 N.Y.Vol. they wer mustered out and starting for home. I did not the particulars
So write Soon
