Bowles E. Armistead to Luther W. Hopkins, 20 May 1910
            Upperville, May 20th 1910

Mr Luther W. Hopkins.

                        Dear Comrade—
Your letter just received—thank you very much. I will send you the address of Rev. James E Poindexter as soon as I can hear from Richmond as I am anxious for Mr C. W. Lewis to communicate with him and get all things straight. Gen Doubleday did my brother great injustice when he stated that he fought on the Union side at the 1st battle of Manassas—and neither I or any soldier in the confederate army believes that he regreted being a confederate. That charge has been denounced by Southern writers. When I read Gen Doubledays statement I went to see Gen Payne and he told me he would write to Gen Doubleday in regard to the matter and state that / the statements were false &c. I would much prefer you not mentioning my brother if you have to mention what Gen Doubleday said for it will anger all Confederates to read it and the past when it conflicts with the present had better be left alone, it would only stir up a feeling of enmity enmity.

I have a Cousin in Baltimore Mr George Armistead, whose address is The Mary Club. it was his father who brought my brothers body to Baltimore. I think he could give you much information &c.

I will write as soon as I hear from Richmond. Wishing you much happiness

I remain Your Old Comrade & friend
