My Dear Sir:
I have your very pleasant letter of 10th instant and take great pleasure in mailing you today several copies of my little address, with my compliments.
I wish to tell you that I became so interested in your book that I could not put it down until I had finished reading it. In my judgment it is one of the most interesting and fascinating of all the histories of the past war I have ever read. I don't know which to admire most, / your [?] as a Confederate soldier or your fame as a scholarly historian and writer. I wish the greatest possible sale of your splendid work.
Believe me to be with very high regard and much admiration
Positively yours,
Joseph R. Anderson
(Son of the late General Joseph
R. Anderson C.S.A. of
Richmond, Va)
I enclose this circular to show you what a great work I am trying to do for my Alma Mater the old VMI. Among your numerous old friends, living or dead if there are any "old VMI boys" I shall be very grateful if you will aid me in securing [?]
J.R.A.
