Mr. Luther W. Hopkins
                        Baltimore, Md.

My dear Sir:
Your letter of 13th inst. with the very handsome letter of Mr. Hamlin of Leicester, Massachusetts, has just come and I thank you very much.

If I can aid your getting your most excellent book introduced into our schools I will be be truly glad. I gladly give you permission / to publish what I said about it though I doubtless would not have written so hurriedly had I known my letter would be seen by the public. I can only repeat in [?] what I said, that I consider your history fine. the gallant [?] private soldiers [?] one of the very best books on our Confederate war, most faithful in / its accuracy and as exceptionable in text and withal [?] interesting.

That is high praise Mr Hamlin gives you and his generous spirit is most considerable. If all the schools of the North were [?] by such noble-minded scholars the rising generation of [?] would go / an honester nation of us of the North.

[?]my friend Capt Henry A [?] of Baltimore above [?] commends the VMI Battalion of Cadets at New Market and who is beloved by every VMI boy for his bravery and his [?] enobles. I believe he could be a great [?] to go. Faithfully yours
                                                                        Joseph R. Anderson
