Lunsford L. Lomax to Luther W. Hopkins, 8 September 1911
Gettysburg Penna
8th September 1911
My dear Captain,
A copy of your very interesting book, "From Bull Run to Appomattox" reached me a few days ago, for which I am extending my thanks, grateful acknowledgement also for the kind words written therein. I assure you I shall not only enjoy the book, but prize it as truth—fine & unblemished narrative /
With reference to the route of your regiment after the battle, July 3rd. You will find in Stuart's report vol 2 Part 2 Records of the War that Jones' Brigade guarded the gaps of Jack's Mountain & were engaged nearly every day. I can only state that my Reg't did not go to Monterey but went to Emmitsburg & from there to Hagerstown. Wherever Jones' Brigade is mentioned the 6th Va Cav. is of / course included. Fitz Lee went to Monterey. The cavalry united at Hagerstown.
You will find the vol. referred to above in any public library or in the hands of many private individuals.
Let me know if you have any trouble finding your route.
Truly Yr Comrade
L. L. Lomax
