Dear Sister Ella,
I suppose you
will be looking for a letter from
me by this time. Therefore I
must try a write a little.
I have got back to Old Virginia
again. got here last night to
Capt Bedlog Island last Friday.
Came by water in an old government
transport. We had a very disagree
- able time of it. In the first place
we were awfully crowded and next the
wind blew a good deal, so that on
the first day I was a little sea -
sick and that wasnt very pleasant
but, we got here safe and sound
after a while. we are waiting now
to be sent to parole camp. I don’t
know how long we shall have to wait
but I hope not long. The weathher
here is quite warm & the mud. Oh
Dear, I am afraid that I spoilt
my boots coming up from the city last
night, but aint sure as I haint
seen only the tops of them to
day owing to the immense quantity
of Virginia sile on them
When I was up to Stowe I made
arangements with Hanson
& Francis to go up home with
me the next time. I went home
from Brattleboro but I am
afraid that we shant go this
winter. it’s too bad ain’t it?
Attended a school one
evening while I was there & had
a favorable good time. I didn’t
go to Uncle Loevies, or Aunt
Achsak. Uncle Lymans
folks told me that Scrooge was
sick with the canker rash &
measles & I was afraid I should
catch some of them if I went there.
I hope you have got well by
this time. I don’t think it is
best for me to go home again
if it is going to make you sick
but if I get a chance I will go
and risk the consequences.
I cant think of anything
to write today therefore
I shall have to stop writing
It is a shame to send so short
a letter , but you must accept
of it - this time & look for a long
next time My love to all.
Merritt
