Charles E. Hazelhurst to William R. Gerhart, 11 October 1866
Louisville Ky.
Oct 11th 1866
Sir
You will no doupt think it strange in me to address you but as Lieut. Haslehurst is an Officer of your Regt, and who has the misfortune of being a Brother of mine in who I have great interest and affection and hearing that he was dead I have taken the liberty of addressing you on the subject. I will state first that a Lady called at my house on the 7th of this month and stated that she was Mrs. Warner, wife of an officer belonging to your Regt by that name, and that she had left the 125th Regt at Fort Senden, New Mexico, three weeks ago in good health and in the best of spirits. This was on the 7th of Oct that she was at my house / on the 9th two days later Mrs Warners sister came at my house bringing me the news of Fred Hazelhurst death. She stated first that Lt Warner and Fred had fought a duel and that both were killed. That Warner fell at the first fire and while on the ground in the agonies of death raised his revolver and shot Fred through his bowels. Then again she stated that they had a rough & tumble fight while going to dinner firing six shots at each other. Fred being wounded in the bowels when he rushed on Warner wrested the revolver from him and shot him through the heart. Now Col I dont want you to think that I swallowed all she told me but I did think that thare was something maybe to make the story out of. She said the information came from the / Lt Col Duncan of the 125th regt who wrote to Warner uncle at St Louis. She stated that he had written three times about it to his uncle at St Louis and that the uncle had written to them. I wished to see the letters. She said they had burnt them up being afraid that Mrs Warner might get hold of them. They represented Mrs Warner as being nearly crazy on account of the affair. I wished to see Mrs Warner but they refused to let me see her. Now all this affair Col is not got up for nothing and if you can throw any light on the subject
