Loyal Barber Wort was born on December 6, 1830, in Pennsylvania to Susan Wort. By 1850, he was working as a shoemaker in Hicksville, Ohio. He married Susan Hendershot on January 4, 1853, and they had at least eight children: Elizabeth, born around 1854; Eugene, born around 1856; Cordelia, born around 1858; Louisa, born around 1861; Rose, born around 1864; Jennie, born around 1867; Carrie, born around 1869; and Maggie, born around 1874. By 1860, he owned $150 of real estate and $75 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 29, 1861, and he mustered in as a musician in Company E of the 21st Ohio Infantry on September 19. The regiment took part in the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Atlanta campaign. He described Chickamauga as “the hardest fighting ever known.” He mustered out on September 19, 1864.
He settled in Antwerp, Ohio, after leaving the army, and he resumed his work as a shoemaker. By 1870, he owned $400 of real estate and $150 of personal property. They returned to Hicksville in the 1870s, and he died on April 30, 1893.
