Memphis tenn March 28 1864
Dear parents and Brothers
i take this presant opertunity to in forme you that i am well at this presant time and hope that thease few lines may find you all the same whe left Cairo last friday and got heare yesterday about noon and staid on the Boat til about 4 oclock and then whent in to the fort it is fort pickens it comenses at the City and is about 2 miles long and has plenty of them big guns in it it is so windey that i will have to quit fore this presant time and theaire is no good plase to write fore whe have got nothing but the ground to set on and no shelter to stay in and whe expect to leave every minute /

i am well to day onley some tired of riding on the Cares and steam boat fore whe have had some of the hardest steam boating that you ever saw when whe whare comming up the white river fore some times whe whare in the brush on one side and then on the other and watching fore the rebs the whole time fore whe expected to be atacted every minute But whe whare ready fore them the Country up this river is a hard looking plase it is very low and swampy and wheare it is high it is a regular red clay and it sticks to a fellows feet like tar or beeswax yesterday whe landed heare safe and sound whe left Memphis on the evening of the 29 and got to Duvalls Bluff in the evening of the 31 and staid on the boat all night and on the 1st of Aprile about noon whe took / the Cares fore this plase it is about 50 miles acrose and whe seen wheare thay had bean a fight the day before and it was quite a smart littel fight But the rebs got cleaned out and the union Boys drove them about 14 miles and kiled and took quite a lot of them thaire was a good many rebel graves on the field that i saw, and the trees wheare all pecked up; and it looked as if somebody had bean pulling the bark from the trees and thay rebs thought thay would try our Boys to day again down at Duevolls Bluf the plase wheare whe took the Cares fore this plase. thay thought thay would take that plase but thay mised it fore the 3 minosota was thaire to wait on them and thay gave them a warm dinner free of / charg But not of Bullets ore cold steel the rebs had about 700 men but thay had to get up and clime fore the woods whe lost 7 men kild and 10 wounded But the rebs lost a great many more than we did fore thay whare all cut to peases and drove in every direction (thaire is a part of John Ghearing regement heare yet But he has gone down to Red river to help whip the rebs out theaire
