Sunday Evening December 4 1864
 
My Dear Brother
I take this presant time to informe you that i am well and hearty and I hope and pray that thease few lines may find you well and hearty the rest of the Boys are all well and hearty and ready fore thaire rations when ever thay come around and thay are all ful of fun and fleas and are ready fore any thing that comes around ore turns up well Bill i was sory to hear that poor Dan Uplinger was dead well so goes the Boys first one than the other But thay have falen in the Servise of thair Country whe have parted with many a brave boy that whe will never se again in this world But i feal glad that dan was hapy in the Lord and that he was willing to leave this world / But I hope that the time will soon come when this war will be over and the soldier will be permited to return home to those whome he loves and those that love him and i think Bill that the time haint far distant when whe will be permited to return home fore the war news is very good and thay still keap geting better i think
 
well Bill i think the Election went about right fore Old Abe is re Elected to the Chair again and i think that the thing will go off about right whe like Old Ben Buttlers speach first rait down hear whe think that it is about the thing that whe nead at presant and if Old Abe puts it into execution i think the rebs will hunt thair holes ore whe will help them to find thair holes /
 
well Bill i want you to go and se Mary often and help hir to keap up good courage and i want you to pray often with hir and help hir to keap up good courage fore i am afraid that she is discouraged and I want you to keap up good grit and pray often in secret fore that is the life of the soul and if you want to get along as a Classleader you must not mind what every body says fore if you do you cant never get along so just do right as near as you can and put the rest and yourself in the hands of the Lord and then it will all be right and you will feal all right and every thing will go right So now Bill just keep a stiff upper Lip and let the folks no that you haint afraid of them and thay will let you alone /
 
Bill you will excuse me fore not writing any sooner to you and answering your letter witch I got some time ago But i have bean so buisey to work on the hospital that i could hardley get time to answer Marys letters But whe are most done with them and then I will have more time and i hope i will be more punctual fore the future I am glad that John Gehring has come to se you all Give him my best respects I wrote a letter to Mary yester today and sent it this morning no more fore this time But write soon and I will try and be more punctual remember me in your prayers from your afectionate Brother J.
