December the 17th A D 1865
 
Dear cousins
           I have Just seated my self down down to let you know that we are all well at present and I hope when those fiew lines comes to hand they will find you all well and harty I made a sled and waggon and I have bin chopping wood and now I am going to school now we had some snow but it has all gone to sticks now and we have had some very cold weather for the last weak back. /
 
            we have got a very good school teacher this winter & she sayes her morning prairs every morning I havent got very much to rite and not very much time and so I will bring my scribling to a close mother wants to know whether Jacob had got home yet or not so I must bring my scribling to a close this time and I will try and do better the next time I rite you must excuse my poor ritting for this time and I will try and do better the next time I rite
