Robert Gardner Small
Robert Gardner Small was born around 1837 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Benjamin and Elizabeth Small. His father was a railroad “depo master” who owned $1,500 of real estate by 1860. Small grew up and attended school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and by 1860, he was working as a clerk.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 5, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in the 1st Massachusetts Independent Light Artillery Battalion later that day. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. He mustered out on October 19, 1864.
 
He returned to Cambridge after the war, and he earned a living as a stencil maker. He married Lydia Farnham on October 5, 1872, but she died four years later. He spent the rest of his life in Somerville, Massachusetts, and he died there on November 11, 1902.
