Horace Greeley to Joshua R. Giddings, 13 August 1845
Tribune Office,
Newyork, Aug. 13, 1845.
Hon. J. R. Giddings,
Dear Sir:
Yours of the 5th has just reached me. I write to acknowledge the horer, and to say that I shall fight the Texas battle to the last gasp, and on the broadest grounds. I think the People generally are ripe for this—I mean the [?] people—though Mammon will probably carry the day in the commercial cities. Still, the struggle must be maintained to the utmost limit of Constitutional resistance. I pray you to suggest any thing that may be useful to the common cause.
Yours,
Horace Greely
PS. can you inform me of the Post Office address of my uncle Leonard Greely, residing in your county. He is a humble farmer, but a good man. I have lost track of him.
