Rezin G. Howell to David G. Howell, 6 October 1860
West Point N.Y. Oct 6th 1860
Brother David
It has been some time since I heard from home But I guess you are all like myself that is you have no time for writing. I suppose you all think it very strange that I dont write oftener but I have as much as I can do to get my lessons and can write only Saturday evenings and Sundays. Did mother get my last letter in answer to her last.
I think I am progressing tolerable well in my studies enough I hope to pass the examination in January though it will be more critical this year than ever I expect and out of the seventy-six which compose the 5th class I expect nearly half will be found deficient.
The Prince of Wales is now in Washington and I expect will be here in about a week or perhaps not for a longer period of perhaps a week I am very anxious to see him though I expect we will have to entertain him with reviews skirmish drills &c which will not be so agreeable.
I have just returned from chestnut hunting there are a great many near here but mostly off of limits yet we manage to get some Saturday evenings when our limits / are more extended.
I have no news to give you I merely write to let you know that I am still alive and in good health and with the hope of hearing from you soon and of receiving your pardon for this short and uninteresting letter I remain
Yours most truly
Rezin
