Rezin G. Howell to Anna G. Howell, 19 October 1860
West Point Oct 19th 1860

Dear Mother
I received your welcome letter a day or two ago and I now improve the first opportunity of answering it. John Hood was here a day or two since and told me he had seen you all I suppose he has returned there again by this time he treated me very kindly indeed and offered to give me any assistance I might require in the way of clothing &c but I can obtain all the clothing I require with the exception of collars (of which article they have an extremely poor assortment here) and which he could not obtain for me the reason why I was so particular as to the pattern is because we have to wear them turned over the coat collar and they are much more convenient and fit much better than any other kind. every Cadet in the corps has his collars made at home and sent to them.

The Prince of Wales visited this place on Tuesday last and we had quite a lively time in showing our respect to his magesty. his appearance was quite different from what I expected he was dressed quite plainly but neatly, conducted by the Superintendent he and his suite visited the heights of Fort Putnam and other renowned places of war, and also all the academic buildings connected with the academy. the Corps of cadets and all the troops / stationed on the Point were then reviewed for his entertainment. There were a great many people preasent numbering I suppose between six and eight thousand, but I have to go to drill now and will close. My health still continues to be good and I think I am getting along tolerable well. It seems like asking a great deal of you but if you will send me some more postage stamps I would be very much obliged to you as I have some envelopes which I would like to get rid of but to save a report I will close

Give my love to all and I hope to hear from you soon

I remain
Yours most affectionately
Rezin
