My dear mother
Again I am once more stationed in my place of seclusion, and "great goodness" haven't I got the blues. I arrived here in perfect safety with plenty of time after a very pleasant trip. I had a splendid time in N.Y. city, met all my class mates there, and was shown over nearly all the city.
I did not however arrive as soon as I expected being delayed in Cincinnati from the time I got there, which was about twelve, until ten at night. I was very sorry afterwards that I started from home before Monday morning, however I made some purchases which I would otherwise have neglected
Every thing looks as natural as of yore. I have already laid in a supply of upwards of 1200 pages of philosophy, 500 of Chemistry, and about the same amount of tactics with drawing and riding to begin with. It will be rather a difficult job I guess to bring my self down / to studying after such a long recreation We have a very long and difficult, but very useful course this session. We have been only laying the foundation for the practical and useful part for the last two years and now I must learn how my principles are to be applied I only hope that I will be more successful in the application than in the deduction.
I have the blues to bad to write you a long letter at preasent, but in the course of a few days I guess my head will be a little clearer as they Doctor "Phil" is an excellent stimulant and I will be more capable of writing I suppose you have heard from Taff since I left and hope he is getting along all right. Tell him to be sure and write to me when you write again. With the hope of hearing from you soon I will close
Your very affect son
