Rezin G. Howell to Anna G. Howell, 14 December 1870
N. Y. City
Dec. 14th 1870
Dear Mother
I have really been so much engaged heretofore that I have hardly found time to write as I promised. And now I will write only a few lines, as I have another expedition before me and as I expect to leave for Washington either tomorrow or the next day, from whence I will return home as soon as I can settle my business. I have met a large number of acquaintances here and consequently have had a delightful trip. I regret to say that I have heard Nillson only twice, and although her singing / was far ahead of any thing I had previously heard, yet I cannot say that my anticipations were fulfilled. She sang both times in the Oratorio of "Messiah". Whereas the opera is her forte. She is now making a tour through some of the western cities But I will tell you all about it when I see you again
You may look for me about the 20th possibly a day or two sooner or later
Yours affectionately
Rezin
