My dear Net
I have been trying for the last week to write you and acknowledge the receipt of your beautiful present, and give you hearty thanks in the names of both Emily & myself for the same. Beside thanking you for the present I also wanted to say how much I regreted missing you while we were in Ky.—The high waters were too much for us—kept us in Pitsburg two days and in Cincinnati six, so that the day set for my arrival had to pass while we impatiently / whiled away the time in Cin. I regret all the more that you did not meet my wife, for I know it cost both you and Lizzie a considerable effort, and I cannot tell when another opportunity will present itself for you to make her acquaintance. It seems singular as well as unfortunate that she should have gone to our old home, and remained there nearly a week, and not have met one of my sisters. Emily seemed to enjoy her trip to Ky. notwithstanding the miserable weather. Hattie and Lilly were both very kind and succeeded in leaving in her mind a most favorable impression. We are now house keeping in my old mansion and are already growing prosaic and matter of fact. The household machinery is being shaped and oiled, and already runs with a reasonable degree of smoothness. Emily seems well satisfied with the number of presents she received and also with the quality. Her expectations I think have been fully realized in both respects. I think they number about forty and all of them handsome. About the wedding trousseau &c you will have to ask Hattie when you see her, for I expect she had a minute and complete description, from Emily, and probably remembers it all. My house has undergone / quite a transformation, and, we flatter ourselves, now makes a right decent appearance. Emily is asleep up stairs while I am writing or she would probably send some word—she has expressed her regrets frequently at not having met you.
I hope we will be able to go to Ky. again, some day, in the next year or two, and meet you all.
Affectionately your brother
Rezin
