Eugenia McDonald to Nettie Howell, 2 May 1887
Mount Vernon Barracks
Alabama
May 2nd
My dear Mrs. Roger
As an old friend of Captain Howell's and an intimate friend of Emily's—I have deputed myself to tell you that Captain Howell is very sick—and great uneasiness is felt concerning him.
He was taken on, I think the night of the 20th with angina pectoris, and although that trouble has not re- / turned he is very weak. The Doctor is with him constantly and Emily is of course always near his side. I will write to you each day until there is a change, knowing how anxious you will be. I have heard Emily speak of you, and I have as I said, deputed myself to let you know that your brother is very sick. Hoping to be able to give better news tomorrow I am with much sympathy
very sincerely
