Leonard Wood to Charles H. Stevens, 13 July 1863
N Lominster July 13th/63
Mon eve 8oclk

My very dear friend Charly.

I have just recd yours of the 11th, was overjoyed to learn that your wound was not dangerous, am glad that you are where Mother, that best of all earthly friends (to a single man) can nurse you.

I am very anxious, (yet dread it) to hear the list of killed wounded & missing, in the "Gallant & glorious old 15th". / Mr Darwin Wilder got a letter from Ed, to night, he & Corniel were all right, only 4 left in Co A. How sad to think we shall never meet Ward, Jorgenson, Kirkland & Rollins any more, but such is the price of victory. I think with you, that it looks very encourageing on our side; bully for the draft, suits me better than buying a man for 3 or 5 hundred dollars. wrote to Staples yesterday, told him if I was drafted, should work my card for a privates berth in old Co. K, if it haint gone up. /

By to nights news, looks a little squally in N Y city, as to the draft, but reckon a few rounds of Grape & cannister, sprinkled among the mob, will cool them down, dont you? I hope every man that resists, the enforcement of the laws of the Union, will have the privilige, of taking peaceable possession of a tract of land (3 foot under ground,) 6ft x 18in.

George Knox visited me last week, didnt we have a good time? we traveled from Falmouth all the way back to Camp Kalorama. I want to see you, very much indeed, / Come up just as soon as you can, & make it your home with me. My wife wishes to be remembered to you, says "tell him I am glad his wound is no worse".

                        With love & best wishes
                        from your true friend
                        & comrade
                                                L Wood.

PS. I was very sorry, not to be able to attend as pall bearer at Col Wards funeral, but did not receive the notice till the eve of that day. Frank went, will tell you all about it when you come up.                Good night.
