William Rodgers Memoir, undated
Saturday June Sept 5th 1862 William Rodgers at Brookville enlisted Jefferson County Pa. enlisted in the Union Army of the Potomac then in The service of the United States Against the Rebbels of The South in Company I. 148 Reg. Pa. Volentears. Ciles J. Marlin was Elected Capt. John Maguire 1st Left. Oron Brown 2nd Left all of Brookville, and left home for Harrisburgh Pa same day. Arived at Harrisburgh Tuesday Sept 8th and the 148 Reg. Pa. Vollentears examed and organised and sworn into the servis of the United States, and then sent to Camp Curtin a short distance from Harrisburgh. James A Beaver of Bellfont Clearfield County Pa was Commishioned Cournal of said Regement
The 148 Reg. Pa. Vol. left Camp Curtin/Thursday Sept 9th 1862 and went by Rail to Cockeysville Maryland 14 miles from Baltimore and garded the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Rode for some time
Oct 1st 1862. I was detailed as Hospitel nurse at Cockeysvill and served as such to Nov. 26th and then joined my Regement Wendsday Dec 16th 1862 the 148 Reg. Pa. Vol. was ordred to Break up Camp. and march to Fredricksburgh Virginia in order to Pertisapate in the Fredricksburgh Fite on the south side of the Rappanack River we arived their first at the close of the Battel the Union Army of about three hundred thousand men strong was defeted by the rebel Army with a hevy loss on both sides. we then encamped at Falmoth Station oposate Fredricksburgh Vir for the ballance of the winter about this time the 148 Reg. was attached to the 1st divisin and second Army Core of the Army of the Potomac Generial Burnsides/Commander of this Core. After the disastrus Battel of Fredricksburg General Burnside was Promoted to Commander in Cheif of the Potomac Army then the 148 Reg Pa. Vol was Annexed to the 3rd Army Core. all the time we lay at falmouth station we ware employed in doing camp gard and picket duty and watching the movements of the Confederate Army.
Airely in the spring of 1863 General Burnside formed a plan of Actacting the Confederate Army under General Lee then laying at Fredricksburgh and Chalchilarville orders was given to march to this attack but the wether being very Rany and the rode very deep with mud while transporting his hevy artley and Pontoon Bridges stuck in the mud which put an end to this Campaine the solders suffering severely from Rain and cold. After this disaster General Burnsed was releived of his Comand and General Joseph/Hooker was Appointed Commander in Cheif of the Potomack Army. Shortly after Genrial Hooker’s promotion he also formed a plan of attacting the Rebel Army at Fredricksburgh an Chancelersvill he gave orders to all his officers and men of the Army to march break up Camp and march to these points and give the Confedrates then under General Lee battel. This order of General Hooker was obaid on the last day of Aprile 1863 The union forces all landed at their several stations nearly three hundred thousand men strong This nite we all encamped near to Chanclersvill. Next morning being May 1st 1863 we ware ordred to attack the Confedrate Army then laying at Chancelersville. The attack was made by the union Army and after fiting desperly four days the union Army was defeted on the Afternoon of the fourth day at a loss of several thousand men on both sides. I came out of this battel uningurd although bullits whisling/Past me every second of the time and many men falling all around me. we retreated and fell back to our old camp at Falmouth Statin and remained their untill June the 13th 1863 doing Picket duty and watching the Rebel Army. After this repulse fiting Jo. Hooker was releaved of his Command and General Meed was Appointed General in Chief of the Potomac Army too or three days before the 13th of June 1863 the rebel Army was discovered to be on march for some point unnowen on the 13th day of June General Meed followed with his Army caught up with them at Chambersburgh. Gave them battel and defeated the rebels under General Lee on the 13th of June. The day that General Meed started his Army in persute of General Lee I obtained leave of absence from my regement on account of Rumatism and was sent to the/Convalesent Camp near Alexandria, Va. I arived here on the eveng of the 14th June and on June the 17th was appointed Assistant Ward Master in said Camp in ward 24. Nov 20th 1863 I was detailed to take charge of Cornal McKelveys Privite Rooms he being Commander of said Camp
I remained in this situation untill I obtained my discharge from the Army and came home to Brookville
