William Rodgers Pension Document, 4 January 1884

In the Claim of William Rodgers No 455.416 for Invalid pension late of Co. I 148 Reg Pa. Vol.
Claimant, did reside on a lot of ground of 8 Acers in Rose Township Jefferson Co. Pa nearly joining to the Borrough line of Brookville for five years Previous to his inlistment during that time he was engaged part of the time in Clerking in the store of John Clements now deceased in the Borrough of Brookville, Pa. The other part of the time he was engaged in Cultivating the ground on which he resided and frequantly working by the day as he could get work before his enlistment. Claimants self and famly has resided on the same ground as above menshioned from the date of his discharge to the/present time.

The first attack of Rheumatism Claiment had in the Army was in the four part of the winter of 1863 the 148 Reg. Pa. Vol. Then ware encamped at Falmouth Station in, Va, it first commenced in claiments his rite leg in his nea at or aboute the latter part of January 1863 it was brought in Claiment by exposure while doing picket duty and sleeping on the wet and damp ground at nites. The affects of it at that time was very painfull Claiments nea was swolon and the leaders of the leg drowen so that claiment could not walk without great pain it continued to be better and worse by times all through Febuary March Apr May and June I was of duty frequent on acct of it. I do not rember of laying in the hospitel of the Reg and was being treated because by the surgon of said Reg I always lay in my quarters when I was Affected and unfit for duty and was ocas and was by times treated by the sergant of said Reg.

on or aboute the 13th day of June 1863 the 148 Regt broke up at Falmouth St. Camp, to follow Gen Lee to Gettisburg on that morning that the 148 Reg Broke up Camp and and preparing to march the surgeon of the Regt examoned Claimant and sent Claimant to Fairfax Hospitle. Claimant was then suffering from Rheutasem and could not travel much Claimant arived at Fairfax Hospital that evening and and was treated their for Rheumatism next day was sent to Camp Convalesent

(Va) treated their for Rheumatism by Dr A. T. Hichhold during the time Claiment staid in Camp Covallessent he had severe actacts of Rheumatism and was discharged at said Camp Convallessent on January 9th 1864 when discharged Claiment returned home had a severe attack of Rheumatism then which lasted continued very severe most of the time untill in the winter spring of 1865 Part of this time I was confined to the house at other times I could limp around, about this time it commenced moved to my rite hip joint this attack was severe confined Claimant to the house for perhaps two months it then got easi nearly well and it did not trouble Claiment only by times as the wether changed up to the year 1870 it then left Claiments hip and did not trouble him very much any more untill about the year 1875 at this time the Rheumatism Comenced in Claimants Right Arm above the elbo

joint which continued for about two three years during this time Claiment had but very little use of his arm
in1878 the fore part of the year it left Claiments Arm and comenced in the four joints of Claiments fingers of Claiments both hands the rheumatism has been almost constant in Claiments fingers from 1878 untill the present time it has been so severe that it has drowen three of his fingers of both hands of joint they are notted on the joints and drawen crucked so that Claiment can do but little work at manal manual laber. he Claiment has not suffered from had any attacts of acute disease of any kind since the incurrence of his disabilitey except has had slite colds did not employ any Physician in these cases.

After Claimants discharge an after Claiment had returned home he counsled Dr Hugh Dowling then living in the Borrough of Brookville, Pa he treated he Claiment for Rheuitasim and was his Physician up to the time of his death which occured about 1876 Since that time he has had no physician Claiment using Patton medisons recommended for Rheumatism

Claimants occupation after his discharge the First two years after his discharge he was unable to do any work at manueal laber from the year 1866 Claimant was able to work about half of the time in Cultivating the ground on which I he lives up to the year 1872 Since 72 since Claiment wife has been keeping a boarding house Claimant doing little shores about the house at times when he is able to work. Claimant is not able to do work at manual laber of any account at the present time
