Camp in the woods
four miles north of Dallis Geo
Dear Uncle
Once more I will attempt to write you a few lines, hopeing that when they reach you they may find you with all the others in good health. I hardly know what to write about there is a great deal that might be said but I have neither time nor room to say much. Wednesday eve our forces came in contact with the enemy and drove them to their works with hard fighting. Thursday there was not much done but skirmishing on thursday morn we had breast works built / along the whole line. Fryday satureday sunday and to day there was some cannonadeing and heavy skirmishing. at about twelve last night the rebs made a charge on our lines but were repulsed with heavy loss.
McPherson has got in their rear, and now holds Dallis. Our boys are getting pretty well worn out a good portion of the time they have to lay flat on the ground for their safety. they are getting so that they drop down most any place and go to sleep, no difference if the front line is engaged. Our Brigade has not been engaged but very little / yet and that in skirmishing. I know of nothing more that I can write at present. to day we are in the rear resting. pardon me for not writing more.
Respectfully your Neffew.
W H Bone
