Dear Mother
 
I thought I would write you a few lines to pass off time I think it is the coldest day we have had this winter I have felt the cold the cold in the ward the most to day of any but it is pretty comfortable they keep the stove rite hot most of the time to day Eli Forbes and Mother West came down and see me yesterday I was very glad / to see them Eli told me that Erastus Hillman was married and he had seen his wife have you seen her and what kind of a wife has he got Is he at home now mother I want you or Harriet when you see C Ed Drake to tell him they is a fellow in my ward from West Brookfield that belongs to his company by the name of John Adams he says he knows Ed well this fellow has to go on crutches he is wounded he was taken prisnor and our folks got him away mother I have commenced to read the New Testament I have / got as far as the fourth 4 chapter in John dont you think I have done well I read in it every day I have read 4 chapters to day Mother as for my leg I never see a wound do any better then mine does the Doctor thinks it is a doing very well and the dressen to I will tell you what I dress it with wash it with warm water and castell soap just take the chill off of the water and then I take and soake a rag in until moist and then put that on that is very healling that what I have dune it with for the last 2 weeks / the sore is about as big as half a dollar now Harriet knows how big it is when she saw it have you got your wood all in to the woodhouse or do have to go out doors after it if you do it must be very hard for you. I was very glad to hear from you you wrote me a very good letter how is Grandmother I suppose the cold weather takes hold of her how I would like to take hold of her hand. I would like see her make her thumbs gous like yous to I had a good time with her the last time I saw her Miss Fiske I hope she is smart and doing well in her school I suppose the girls are out most everry evning out ant they I am sure that Ant Minerva ant well I want you to remember about that dollar bill I hant seen Jones but once Harriet is a doing well ant she I hope she is a doing well I like to see folks doing well Is Mr White agoing to stay with Mr Forbes or not I did not understand what you said about it I want to answer this letter as soon as you can I send my respects to all of you this from your son Sylvester H Stevens
