William Cook
1) Hark hark my young friends it is a melancholy sound
The arrow of death flies quickly around
Their is one of your number although he is in his bloom
He is called away by death he now sleeps in his tomb
2) Although he is dead he is inviting you to come
Go read his inscriptions go read them on the tomb
Go down in your churchyard go read them with care
But remember it wont be long till your body must lie there
3) My friends parents they thought they had taught me right well
They thought they had taught me to shun the gates of hell
But I slighted all their offering my own way I took
Remember this young man his name is William Cook
4) It grieved me this young man to think that he must die
For to hasten away to along eternity
For to leave his dear father and mother behind
And his brother and sister whoud been to him so kind /
5) But when he was dead and in going down to his grave
Six silly brave young me he wished for to have
Along side his coffin he wished them to walk
And about his sinful days he requested them to talk
6) When you get to my grave my coffin you set down
While all my young friends will go weeping around
You will open my coffin you gaze awhile on me
While I am a sleeping in a long eternity.
7) Then four brave young men aholt of me will take
To lay me down in the cold silent earth
You will throw on the grave it will mak a dolefull sound
While all my mourning friends will go weeping around
8) Now all my young friends take warning by me
And never place your mind on sinfull vanity
For fear your blessed Jesus will call you too soon
And then your mourning sons will be cut down all noon
