"The Soldiers Wife," Poem, undated
                                                The Soldiers Wife

1)  Ill sing of a soldier that latly come from war
He courted a lady most beautiful and fair
Her fortune was so great that it scarcely can be told
but yet she loved the soldier because he was so bold

2)
She said my dearest soldier I fain would be your wife
but my father is so cruel that I fear he would take my live
he took his sword and pistols and hung them by his side
And swore that he would mary her whatever might betide

3)
As they had been to church and were returnimg home again
They met her old father and seven armed men
O dear cried the lady I fear we shal be slayan
O fear you not my charming the soldier said again

4)
And then her old father with a scorneful frown did say
Is this your behavior to this very day
since you have been so silly as to be soldiers wife
all in this lonsome valey I will end your precious life /

5)
Stop stop cried the soldier i do not like your prattle
For i am the bridegrome and am prepared for battle
He took his sword and pistol and caused them to trot
And the lady led the horse while the bold soldier fought

6)
The first man he met with he quickly had him slain
The next man he met he served him the same
let us run cried the rest for I fear we all shall be slain
fear you not my charmer the soldier said again
to fight the gallient soldier it is alltogether vain

7)
Stop Stop cried the old man you make my blood run cold
Ill give you up my daughter and five thousand pounds in gold
fight on said the lady the portion is to small
stay your hand the old man cried and you shall have it all

8)
He took this young man home with him and he made him his air
Not because he loved him but all through dread and fear
There never was a soldier fit to carry a gun
That would ever flinch an inch till the battle was won

9)
Come all you young soldiers that have money up in store
slight not the soldiers because he is poor /
For they are the men of honor both human kind and free
So boldly they will fight for their wright and liberty
