William G. Gage to Catharine A. Gage, 15 January 1862
Lee Barracks Jan 15th/62

Dear Mother
I arrived here the next day after I left you, but I donot get any time to write we have so much to do, we have to get up at half past six & answer to our names, then we have to go about as far as from our house to the brewery & take care of from four to six horses we then go & wash our selfs & get our breakfast. we have been in the habit of going to water our horses then but it was changed to day so that I shall have more time. after we have watered four horses at the river, which is about three quarters of a mile from the stables, we have a half hour before dinner. after dinner we go & clean our horses again. when through / with our horses, we have to drill with our guns an hour or an hour & a half. by the time we get rested a little, we are called for supper as soon as supper is over we go & water our horses again, so that you see my time is all taken up with duty. We had at one time one hundred & forty seven horses to take care of, but the men begin to come in so that we have but eighty odd now. Yesterday the horses were all drawn up in line & the different colers assign to different companies. we got the brown ones, they were a poor the poorest lot of horses except one on the ground The noncommissioned officers have their choice & I have got a pretty good one. I notice that I have began this letter on the wrong side but you must excuse me I was in such a hurry /
You must write soon & be sure & write all the news.

A part of our company were in a scermish down town the other nite, I will send the details if I can get the paper.

Tell Charlies mother that he is well.

Love to all.
Your son
W. Glover Gage
