Lee Barracks. Feb 15th/63
Dear Father
Your letter of the eight came duly to hand, & glad I was to receive.
You wanted to know how our boys liked Birney for a Lieut. I do not know how we shall like him, he got to be a first rate Ordley Sergent, but I am a fraid he will be so tall now that you can not tuch him with a ten foot pole.
You also wanted to know what thought about going to West Point & when we should go a way from here. In regard to the first I think I can not go till next year any way, and with regard to the latter I will say that there are a great may things to make me / believe we that I am safe in saying we shall leave inside of three weeks if not sooner. my first reason is that we are going to get our pay, up to the first of January, the day after to morrow, that I know to be so for I helped to make out the pay roll a few days ago. the second is that our saddles are ordered to be packed. the third is that there were orders to stop work on a guard house which was building.
I hope we shall leave soon.
Love to all
From your son
Wm. G. Gage.
