South Mountain Md June 28th/63
Dear Brother
Since I last wrote we have been on the move a great deal.
On the afternoon of 20th ins't we started from picket & marched to Farifax staid over nite the Division marched [?] next morning marched to New Baltimore here we (the reg't) left the division our company & H were sent to Salem to scout the rest of the reg't went in some other direction we joined the reg't about dark at New Baltimore we eat supper our selves & let the the horses grase they haveing had nothing but two double hands full of oates that day after supper we marched to Warrenton & staied the rest of the nite marched back to Gainesville joining the Division on the way. the Division marched to Farifax that nite our Brigade staied untill two next morning came to Farifax about noon the Division having reconorted the country to / Rapihanock. We were then delt out three days rations for our selves & two of forage for our horses & marched for Md. we stoped late that nite some two miles beyond Poolsville next morning marched on to ward the city of Frederick, halted within three miles of there and staied over nite next morning marched through the city of Frederick here we got a different reception from that we have been in the habit of geting when we entered a town. After passing through the city we marched on untill four in the afternoon when we camped on this south mountain where the Antetam fight comenced here is said to be the place where the 17th infantry charged.
There are 58 dead rebles buryed in a well across the road, & they are buried all around.
