Camp Stoneman Washington. Sept 28th/63
Dear Father
You will see by the heading of my letter that I am now near Washington D.C. We started from Annapolis on last Thursday on board of transports for this place & got here about ten oclock Friday night I am now in dismounted camp.
Two days before leaving Annapolis I received a letter from you but as I could not carry my letters I do not know the date but in it you spoke of sending me more money if I neaded it I am very much obliged to you but i do not nead any more I should have writen when I received your letter but we were moving from place to place before leaving & I could get no chance.
Capt Thompson is in command of the brigade here & I am on detail with him & shall probably stay here for the present I had rather go to the front but he offered / me a place here as a favor & so I shall stay although I could get promoted if I should go to the front the Captain wrote me when in Annapolis that he would make me a sergent when I came back.
Capt Thompson & his wife have been very kind to me while I have been here he invited me up to his tent to take diner yesterday. Love to all.
I am your affectionate son
Wm Glover Gage
