William G. Gage to Catharine A. Gage, 27 October 1863
Camp near Gainesville Va Oct 27th 1863.

Dear Mother.
It is a long time since I have had a letter from you I believe I answered the last one.

I have not received a letter from home in a bout two weeks except the one which was here when I got here it had been waiting about a week it was dated 2nd October.
I wrote home just one week ago to day I think I shall write once a week when I can but when we are on the march we have no time for any thing but riding.

I was talking with the Capt last night about Saginaw matters & he told me Estela Warner was married to one of the Downes boys I hope he is well off or he will not be able to provide food & cloathing for her.

I am afraid we shall not stay here long for as I am writing I hear the dogs of war growling & Kilpatrick is not liable to lay / still when they growl as the history of the present campaine will show we have been laying still for a bout a week now but if the horses had good for any thing we should not have laid still that long but now that the horses have got partly recruited we will be on the move in a day or two at longest I think.

I was glad to hear that Henry was geting along so finely with his study.

Our company now numbers 9 men 3 corporals 1 sergent for duty on the ground.

Has not Charley Voorheis got a ferlough yet. I saw Vondaniels & Rudd the other day they were boath well Ernest was going to send Father some money to keep for him I think it was sixty dollars.

How is grandmothers health this fall.

Did uncle Darwin write what regiment division & corps he belonged to if he did write & let me know for I might have a chance to see him some time we pass different parts of the infantry every day most It gave me a great deal of pleasure to / what good success Father has had with his peaches.

I hope you are all well Love to all

kiss little Jamie for me.

Your affectionate son
Wm. G. Gage.
