William D. Mann to DeWitt C. Gage, 26 December 1863
Washington D.C.
Dec. 26, 1863

My Dear Sir
Your favor of the 14th inst. just received delayed owing to my absence in New York whither I have been most of the time for the last few weeks on duty.

I am sorry that at present I can send no one home on recruiting service and if I could that it is past the Holiday But I do think I can soon get a furlough for your son who is well known to me & of whom for his brave & manly conduct far beyond his years, I think very / much. Nothing I assure you would give me greater pleasure than to get him a furlough & go home. Mr Driggs has also spoken of it & without me.

Your son was very well when I last heard from him.

Hoping you may soon have the pleasure of seeing him I am

Very Truly yours
Mann
