William G. Gage to DeWitt C. Gage and Catharine A. Gage, 26 January 1864
Jan 26th 1864.
Camp near Stephensburgh Va.

Dear Parrents.
It is now nerly two weeks since I have received a letter from home

I wrote some time since for stamps but have not received any yet so I have to borrow an other to put on this letter If you have not sent some before you receive this please send them because now that we are in winter quarters I want to write to Ball's boys & see what they think of the Yanks geting whipped now.

I suppose you would rather know about my health than any thing else I have been better for the past week. I have had a letter from Mr Driggs in answer to the one I told you I wrote him. I think it will come arround all wright after a while

The Johnies have been deserting quite fast for the last ten days there were twenty came in to the lines of the first division one day last week they deserted the picket front & one of their officers went after some of their Cavalry which were a little way off & just as the deserters got accrost the river the Cavalry came rushing down on a charge but when they got in to the river the deserters sent a volley in to them which changed their tune & also the course of the survivers. our men who were on duty had got in to quite a flurry in the mean time. There were six came over to our regiment yesterday. There were two came over to the sixth regiment this morning & they wanted the our men to take two pieces of artillery down to the river because as they said there was a brigade of theirs agoing to come over but we are not fools enough to take our / gun down there for them to come over & surprise our generals have hard heard to many deserters yarns to get fooled  by them.

I have never been able to get that box yet & I am affraid I never shall see it.

How is money matters up there you we can get plenty of silver here in change for green backs when we buy any thing of the sutlers.

How is the weather in Saginaw it was quite cold here along the first of the month but for about ten days back it has been butifull weather here How are all the folks in Saginaw has Charley Voorheis got home yet, if so how is he. Our orderly sergent has gone home on recruiting service & Father will probibly see him before long & he will tell him I am not so terable sick if I have got the diahroea.

As we have to go on general inspection in the morning I will close.

Your affectionate son
Glover
