Farifax April 6th
Dear Father.
Yours of the 29th came while I was on picket for three days, & after I came back I did not feel as like writing for a day or so, besides I wanted to think of your question.
There are some reasone's why I should not like to except of Mr Chipertons proposition one is that I do not like to be promoted to such a position with out first being promoted to be sergt in my own company but I think that will soon happen, at least by the time he gets his company full, but if he finds that he neads to make that place help fill up his company why I shall get a long very well where I / am I did not come here for promotion but to fight for my country not withstanding I take pride in it as every soldier does.
You spoke about my geting kicked by my brag horse, in the first place I was not kicked enough to prevent my drilling but two days & next it was not my horse that did it it was a horse that an other man was riding down to water & back. as we were marching back he raised up his heals & hit me on the instept.
I am in good sound health & hope you are all the same.
Tell Chiperton if he should conclude to take me I should try & do my duty & I think know it. how many men has he got & how many has Sprooul.
We were about fooled here the / scout we went on except one was on that day we went out about 15 miles that afternoon & took one prisoner was not that smart but the worst of all was that our horses went with out any thing to eat for thirty hours & our officers would not let us take any feed out of that same rebels barn when it was full.
We are three miles south of Farifax station, came here last nite
Love to all
Your affectionate son
