Peter Smith Michie was born on March 24, 1839, in Brechin, Scotland. His family immigrated to America around 1843 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. He enrolled at the United States Military Academy in 1859, and he graduated four years later. In June 1863, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He served with the Army of the James, and he took part in the siege of Petersburg.
He married Maria L. Roberts on September 21, 1863, and they had at least three children: William, born around 1867; Dennis, born around 1870; and Marie, born around 1872. He remained in the army after the war, and he was promoted to captain in November 1865. In 1867, he became an instructor in West Point’s engineering department. In 1871, he was promoted to professor of natural and experimental philosophy. He continued teaching until at least 1900. He died at West Point on February 16, 1901.
