Absent Cozen & friends
             I take the present opertunity to pen you a few lines to let you know that I am yet alive & well & I hope you are all well & prospering. I have ben back to the Battery three weeks & I was glad to get back with my old companions our old men that did not reenlist will leave us in a few days their time is out on the 26th of this month I wish I was coming home with them not to return to the field again 
 
Cozen Robert I dont know but what you think I had forgotton you but I have not. I had to good a visit with the folks there to forget them very soon & I hope to be spaired to return home so that we can visit again. we are in Camp now in front of Petersburg & not more than two miles from the City there is almost a continual firing along the lines & nights our mortars are throwing over fifteen inch shell they make quite a rackett things are pretty quiet here now our army is growing strong every day we are getting from two to six thousand a day now. who are you going to elect for President I am a strong McClellan man still I dont think I could vote against / Old Abe. I hope the right man will get it.
 
I dont know as I can tell you any news this time for I am a poor letter writer at the best.
 
            Mary & Nina is well or wer a few days ago I heard from them. I also got a letter from Sylvester they wer well. I cant write to each one of you seperate so what I write is to all as one & tell Josephes folkes I will write to them next time. give my respects to all & bear in mind that a soldier is always glad to get a letter I should be pleased to have all write to me
